Ok, so first, let me just put it out there that this is being posted for 2 reasons :
A) I was called out by a friend on Twitter for having a "Rant" section on my website, in which I also claim to "Do It A lot", while maintaining a rather empty web page.
B) I was having this talk earlier with a friend and found this to be a rather interesting topic to talk about.
With that being said, let's begin, shall we?
So, in recent years my personal musical development has been fueled dominantly by the expanding of the genre's of music I expose myself to. Along the way I've definitely grown and evolved musically in what I'd like to consider a somewhat short amount of time. I'm not going to say that I enjoy every little bit of music I force myself to study, but I will say that I have found plenty of things I never would have thought I'd like. SO ... Let's study one example.
Example 1 : I am sitting in my room, probably in my underwear, or possibly my girlfriends underwear, listening to Katy Perry's "Firework". I'm all pumped, having a great time, then get up, start dancing and singing to it. Someone opens the door. At that moment my chest stops, I'm terribly embarrassed and run into another room. From here on in I am likely emotionally scarred from the occurrence, and will probably never listen to the song again, or take what I've learned from the song to grow musically.
Now, in observation of this example (which we all know is a strictly hypothetical situation), all enjoyment, and study of the music is completely lost due to the embarrassment met by singing Katy Perry in public. Had said person from hypothetical example #1 never hid away to express their feelings about the song, they could still be enjoying the song, singing it all day, everyday.
But then again .. What's the point in hiding stuff you like ? I have no embarrassment admitting that I have AND STILL DO listen to Ariana Grande, on a regular basis no less, and have no issue admitting as well that the bulk of ridicule would likely come from a fellow "musician" who likely couldn't even play the damn song if they were asked to.
I don't know, I love music, in all forms, extremely heavy to extremely light. Pantera to Christopher Cross. I don't know why people keep "guilty pleasures", and then hide away when they want to jam out to it. Maybe it's the secrecy of the matter? I don't know. No shame in my game in admitting that I like Katy Perry. Catchy music, catchy lyrics, good beat, big voluptuous breasts. 4 elements (or maybe 3, depending upon whether it's on the radio or youTube) that make a great song !
What does everyone else think ?!?!?! I'd absolutely LOVE to hear what you guys (and girls of course!) have to say on the topic...
